| Hospitals and other healthcare providers
require students to complete a variety of measures prior to
volunteering or shadowing onsite. Educators should build in,
at minimum, the following Healthcare Essentials
content into their Health Pathway:
- HIPAA
Training Modules
- Patient
Rights and Responsibilities
- Blood-Borne Pathogens, Infection Control, Sharps, and
Protective Equipment
- CPR/First Aid/AED Certification; Note: Preferred certification
levels are CPR for Healthcare Professionals/Providers and
First Aid for Infants, Children and Adults; Check with the
American
Heart Association, American
Red Cross, and local YMCA facilities for available offerings
and schedules
- Documentation of negative Tuberculosis skin test (or chest
x-ray if prior positive reading); Note: Check with local
healthcare providers regarding individual volunteering requirements,
such as number of negative readings and within what time
frame/lapse
- Diversity and Cultural Sensitivity
- Communication and Presentation Skills; Note: Includes
both writing and speaking
- Inter- and Intrapersonal Communication Styles; Note: Minnesota
Multiphasic Personality Inventory and Myers-Briggs Type
Indicator are useful learning tools
In addition, educators are encouraged to contact their neighborhood
hospitals, long-term care facilities, community clinics, and
other healthcare providers for additional requirements or
assistance in meeting the above; remember to ask about Volunteer
and/or New Hire Orientation schedules and manuals! |
