The Chicana/o Youth Leadership Camp is a great opportunity for high
school youth to be exposed to the San Diego State University
campus. The camp is free to students; they spend a week on campus
living in the dorms. They learn about their own personal dynamics
as well as Latina/o history and the importance of higher education.

News in the world of Medicine from the Wall Street Journal. Hopefully this myth that “vaccinations cause autism” will now die.
Wall Street Journal/Health

“A U.K. medical regulator revoked the license of the doctor who first
suggested a link between vaccines and autism and spurred a long-running, heated
debate over the safety of vaccines.
“In an eight-page decision released Monday, Britain’s General Medical Council found Dr. Wakefield guilty of numerous cases of misconduct in his research.

Teachers can criticize students in their professional e-mail

Parents have a right to view those electronic records, says Kentucky’s

Help us spread the word!
One talented student will win a $2,500 scholarship.
The popular voiceofsandiego.org Student Essay Contest is back for its second year.
Open to 11th and 12th graders in San Diego County, this year's essays will address one of three local debates: the county's role in providing social services; whether the city of San Diego should invest in recycling sewage for drinking water; and whether the San Diego Unified School District's decision not to pursue federal "Race to the Top" funding was right.
The deadline for submitting essays is Friday, May 21, 2010. Essays will be judged on insightfulness, supporting facts and evidence, development of ideas and style. For complete rules and instructions, here's our flyer.
The winning essay writer will receive a $2,500 scholarship to the college of the student's choice. The 10 best essays will be published on the voiceofsandiego.org website in late June.
And, thanks to a donation from Sylvan Learning of San Diego, the top 11th grade essay (or runner-up if an 11th grader wins the scholarship) will win a choice of an SAT prep seminar (which is worth $895) or ACT prep seminar (worth $795).

From Darci Kimball, Castle Park High School Biology/Chemistry, Sweetwater
Union High School District:
I have been using 2 websites which provide incredible, medically-applicable
animations that may be of great interest to those of us who are teaching Medical
Biology or Human A & P. The students have found them to be engaging and...well,
just really cool!
www.argosymedical.com
Illustrates physiology of the human body from cells to organ
systems as well as how medical procedures affect the human body. Some of the
concepts are pretty graphic, so a warning should go out to teachers to
check out the animations first before showing them to students.
http://science.nhmccd.edu/biol/ap1int.htm
Several links are listed for biology and chemistry. But special
interest may lie in the Argosy medical link, ADAM animations, First Aid, cancer,
etc.
There are many other websites, such as the Harvard animations, which are
also pretty neat. But these give you the most "bang for your buck!"

From
Janet Hoff, Webmaster:
Welcome to the RAHSI.org Message Board! This page is primarily intended for
Health Pathway instructors and prospectives. You will note that RAHSI.org is
a comprehensive resource site for multiple audiences (students, parents, teachers,
counselors, administrators, industry reps…). New information is being
added on an ongoing basis—some is time-sensitive (scholarships, institutes,
summer programs; professional development, teaching award nominations; Message
Board page)—so please check back often.
Think of this Message Board as your opportunity to contribute to the richness of RAHSI.org. Share your tips of the trade and new discoveries, communicate with each other, request colleague-to-colleague feedback, etc.!
Please set aside some time to introduce your students to the For Students page on this website, either during class or by providing the URL and assigning them to research at home. Remember, this is a living/breathing site—consider it a “go-to” for a large variety of Health Pathway and career exploration related inquiries.
Finally, do share additional links that will augment the For Teachers curriculum and lab supplements. For example, an article was published on MSN.com today announcing research findings that people with blue eyes have a single, common ancestor. If you are into your Genetics curriculum or will be soon, this might be an interesting article for your students: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22934464/from/ET/. It’s as easy as that!
We encourage your comments and questions. Visit the Contact Us page for more information on how to reach us. Enjoy RAHSI.org. This is for YOU!
